Stephen doesn't like children, books, or children's books -- but he does respect the free market. The fact is, children's books sell, especially when they're written by celebrities. Because Stephen is one of those, he felt it would only be right for him to throw his hat into the ring and pursue writing children's lit in the name of profit.
For advice on how to achieve success in this unfamiliar medium, he went to one of its giants: Maurice Sendak, author of "Where the Wild Things Are." In Part 1 of their conversation, the two men discuss the complexity of children, Sendak's contempt for Newt Gingrich, and the fact that Sendak is allowed to write books for children even though he's a gay man.
