Manatee Massacre

April 5, 2012

The once safe and quiet town of Cocoa, FL, home to an array of novelty manatee mailboxes, experienced an unimaginable act of Valentine's Day violence when mailbox owner Denise Hasty found her innocent manatee blown to pieces. Left with nothing but a stump, the 20-year-old manatee underwent extensive forensic examination that concluded what Hasty and her neighbors most feared: a criminal targeting manatee mailboxes was on the loose.

On a special segment of "Colbert's Very Wanted," Stephen discovers that a series of manatee mutilations central to "mid-South coastal Florida" actually began all the way back in 2001. Watch as a forensic scientist, a ballistics expert, and even a forensic psychologist try to unsuccessfully track down the elusive manatee mutilator.

While "Colbert's Very Wanted" showed plenty of gruesome coverage of the massacre, exclusive photos of the crime scene detail exactly what remained of a once joyful manatee.
