2011: A Rock Odyssey Featuring Jack White

June 21, 2011

In the summer of 2011, Stephen hosted the Dr Pepper-sponsored StePhest Colbchella '011 -- one of the greatest journalist-hosted summer concert series in recent history. But Stephen did more than just host the event. As Stephen reminded his audience that summer, he is not just a music lover, but a music doer.

In the 1980s, he fronted the new wave rock band Stephen and the Colberts, whose unreleased album "Songs for Charlene" spawned the single, "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)." Watch the music video for this long-lost gem below.

With excitement building around StePhest, Stephen decided he wanted to re-launch his music career. To do so, he enlisted the help of former White Stripe and nine-time Grammy-winning guitar god Jack White. Stephen traveled to Nashville, Tennessee and visited White at his label, Third Man Records, to confer with him about re-entering the music business.

In Part 2 of Stephen's visit to Third Man, he picks Jack White's brain about Grammy-winning strategies, and is flattered to have White, through the miracle of video editing, list Stephen as one of his musical heroes. Stephen then plans a collaboration with Third Man girl group, The Black Belles, in an effort to combine his je ne sais quoi with their good looks and musical talent.

Stephen continues his tour of "where the magic happens," and prepares for the most important part of the recording process: the cover photo shoot.

Exclusive Outtakes

Stephen and Jack's conversation at Third Man Records covered so many topics that not all of it could fit on the show. In this uncensored, exclusive clip, the two Bible scholars test each other's knowledge of each other's names and have a Catholic trivia throwdown.
